Welcome Symposium Speaker, D. Peter Herbert O.B.E

D. Peter Herbert O.B.E. is a part-time Judge (Immigration & Employment) and Recorder of the Crown Court. Prior to his judicial appointments he forged a successful career as one of the UK’s leading human rights and international law barristers and served as senior adviser to the UK Home Office on Equality and Diversity as well as to former Attorneys-General Lord Jonathan Goldsmith and Baroness Scotland QC.

Peter’s international law practice traversed Africa, the United States and Europe. He has appeared as Lead Counsel at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (“ICTR”) and the European Court of Human Rights and as Lead Legal Consultant on UK law at a number of US trials.

A fluent speaker of French, Peter led largely French speaking legal teams whilst at the ICTR where he represented the former Minister for Economic Development and Planning at a trial that lasted over 2 years and had to unravel many of the complexities associated with Rwanda’s structural adjustment programme as well as tripartite agreements with international organisations.

Peter has maintained a serious presence on the African continent since 2009 and is based in Nairobi, Kenya for at least half of the year. He is the co-convenor of the historical Bandung Conference and his professional advice has been sought by government ministers, leading corporates as well as investors.

Peter was awarded the Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.) in the January 2010 Honours List by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II for his contribution to international human rights and equality and diversity in the UK, highlighting his many achievements over the years as Chair of the Society of Black Lawyers. His international work was recognised as early as 2002 by the American Bar Association where he was presented with the “Spirit of Excellence Award”.

In 2012 Peter received the Ronald Harmon Brown award for “International Distinction” from the National Bar Association of the USA.
